Oesophageal Manometry & Analysis
High-resolution oesophageal manometry measures the coordination and strength of oesophageal contractions and the function of the oesophageal sphincters. Specialist analysis helps identify disorders of swallowing and oesophageal motility.
When is manometry useful?
It may be used to investigate swallowing difficulty when a structural cause has not explained the symptoms, suspected motility disorders such as achalasia, and selected patients being assessed before anti-reflux or other oesophageal procedures.
What does the test involve?
A thin pressure-sensitive catheter is passed through the nose into the oesophagus and stomach. You will be asked to swallow small amounts of liquid while pressure patterns are recorded.
Interpretation
The recorded study is analysed in the context of your symptoms and other investigations. The findings can help guide further investigation and treatment.
